Sinus Lift / Sinus Bump for successful implant placements

Elevate Your Smile: Sinus Lifts for Superior Dental Implant Stability

The maxillary sinuses are located behind your cheeks, above the upper teeth. These cavities are empty, air-filled spaces, and some roots of the upper teeth extend into them. When upper teeth are removed, only a thin wall of bone often remains between the maxillary sinus and the mouth. For dental implants to be securely placed, sufficient bone is needed. If the sinus wall is too thin, it is not feasible to place dental implants directly.

A successful, enduring dental implant relies heavily on the quality and quantity of the jawbone where the implant will be anchored. In cases where bone loss has occurred from injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation, or lift, can help. This procedure raises the sinus floor to allow for new bone growth in the base of the maxillary sinus above the gum line's bony ridge that anchors the teeth in the upper jaw. This process enables the placement of dental implants into this new bone growth.

You may need a sinus lift if you:

  • Have more than one missing tooth in the back of your upper jaw.

  • Have a significant loss of bone in the back of your upper jaw.

  • Are missing teeth due to congenital conditions or other specific issues.

  • Lack most of the maxillary teeth and require support for dental implants.

Highly Recommended! I'm active duty Air Force at Luke Air Force Base and military dental care does not include implants. I needed an Implant for my front tooth and Dr. Chang was so good! He was so professional! The technology he has is mind-blowing! I was impressed by how quickly my implant site healed.

Dr. Chang made my day. Kind and personable, his patience with me mad me feel comfortable. He completely re-engineered my bite, never taking any shortcuts. Where others may have cut corners to make the job quicker, he cared for my bite like he would have cared for his own. His meticulous attention to detail was outstanding.

Dr Chang is the best dentist I’ve ever worked with. I pay out of pocket for some of my dental treatments and with that said his prices are affordable. He cares about the patients future dental care and not just a quick fix to get you in and out. I’ve had deep cleanings, filings, chip tooth fillings, implants, and wisdom teeth removed. Thanks Dr. Chang for your dental expertise!!

How is the Sinus Lift Procedure Performed at SC Dentistry?

The sinus lift at SC Dentistry typically begins with an incision in the premolar or molar region to expose the jawbone. A small opening is then made in the bone, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted. The created space is filled with bone graft material, which may come from your own body or other sources, including synthetic options that stimulate bone formation. Once the bone material is placed, the site is sutured closed, and the healing process starts.

This healing period is crucial, as it allows the bone to integrate fully with your jaw, a process that may take several months. After this period, dental implants can be securely inserted and stabilized in the new sinus bone.

In cases where enough bone exists between the upper jaw ridge and the bottom of the sinus to stabilize the implant, sinus augmentation and implant placement may occur simultaneously. If not, the sinus augmentation is performed first, and the graft must mature for several months, depending on the graft material used. Once matured, the implants can be placed.

The sinus graft not only enables the placement of implants in patients who previously may have had no choice other than wearing loose dentures but also improves the overall function and aesthetics of the upper jaw.
